Learn what it normally sounds like. A test that starts noticeably slower than it used to is a battery beginning to fail, and that is worth a call before it strands you. A test that runs rough, surges, or cuts short is telling you something is wrong now, while it is still cheap. And a test that stopped happening at all is the loudest signal of the three, because it usually means the controller or the battery is already dead and the unit will not answer when the grid does go down.

We diagnose in a fixed order because the odds are lopsided. The battery causes more no-start calls than everything else combined, and a battery that reads fine sitting still can still collapse the moment the starter pulls on it. That is why load testing matters.
After the battery: fuel supply, which on natural gas means pressure at the unit and on propane usually means a tank lower than anyone realized. Then the transfer switch, then a controller fault, then the boring mechanical causes like a clogged air filter or oil that has thickened past the point the engine will turn freely. Replacing parts in a different order costs you money and still leaves the real fault in place.
