Tampa lightning by the numbers
Hillsborough and Pinellas counties record some of the highest cloud-to-ground lightning density in the country every year. Most strikes are not direct hits to your house. They are nearby strikes that ride the ground or the utility lines into your panel and out through every device plugged into your home.
Why power-strip surge protectors are not enough
The store-bought strips you plug into a wall are designed for tiny fluctuations. They do not protect hardwired devices: your AC, your refrigerator, your stove, your washer and dryer, your tankless water heater, your smart-home hub, your EV charger. A whole-house surge protector installed at the panel covers everything on every circuit.
What we install
We install Type 2 panel-mounted surge protectors with 80 kA per phase ratings, sized for the typical Tampa home. They sit at the top of the breaker panel, neutral and ground are bonded properly, and they include status indicators so you know when the unit has taken a hit and needs replacing.
Cost vs. damage
A whole-house surge protector with professional install costs $400 to $700 depending on the panel. Replacing a single fried HVAC condenser board runs $600 to $1,800. Replacing a refrigerator, oven, and a few electronics after a single nearby strike easily exceeds $5,000.
When to add one
Best window: at the same time as a panel replacement. Second-best: now. We can install a surge protector on most existing panels in under an hour.
Call (813) 933-8010 to schedule, and we will pair it with a $100-off coupon currently active for new surge installs.
