Most panels do not announce that they are failing
They just slowly become a fire risk. Here is what to actually watch for.
Six warning signs
- Frequent breaker trips without a clear cause (more than once a month on the same circuit)
- A burning or fishy smell near the panel. That is melting plastic on the bus
- Warm or hot panel cover to the touch
- Buzzing or humming from inside the cabinet
- Lights dim when the AC, microwave, or dryer kicks on
- You are out of breaker spaces and need a tandem or piggyback breaker added
Brands to replace immediately
These three brands are documented fire risks and are still installed in thousands of Tampa homes:
- Federal Pacific Stab-Lok (FPE). Breakers fail to trip under overload
- Zinsco / Sylvania. Bus bar corrosion causes arcing
- Challenger. Manufacturing defects in the breakers themselves
If your home has any of these panels, the recommendation from every credible electrical engineering body is replacement. We typically swap them for modern Square D, Eaton, or Siemens equipment, properly grounded and bonded.
What a panel replacement actually looks like
- Permit pulled with the City of Tampa or Hillsborough County (depending on your address)
- Full lockout-tagout and utility coordination for the meter pull
- New panel set with copper bus, full ground/neutral isolation, and labeled circuits
- Whole-house surge protector installed at the same time (we strongly recommend it)
- County inspection scheduled and signed off
- Typical project: 6 to 8 hours, mostly with the power off
Cost expectations
